Kidney stones

Pain from a kidney stone needs assessment to determine its size, location and whether it is blocking urine flow.

What might you notice?

Pain in your side or back that may spread to the groin, nausea, burning when urinating or blood in the urine. Some stones are found during tests performed for another reason.

How are stones assessed?

The consultation helps determine which laboratory and imaging tests you need. Kidney function and the possibility of infection are also reviewed.

Treatment and prevention

Not all stones need surgery. Depending on the case, observation, medicines or procedures to break up or remove them may be considered. We then discuss steps to reduce the risk of new stones.
